(The Crazy Cat Lady of Drag)

Hey everyone! It’s me, Astala Vista—your favorite Kitty  Queen, the self-proclaimed “Crazy Cat Lady of Drag,” and your behind-the-scenes tour guide into my busy, feline-filled life. Want to know what really goes on behind all the glitter, glam, and giggles? Well, buckle up, because here’s a little peek into my world!

How I Got Started in Drag

My drag journey kicked off in April 2012, inspired by a moment watching RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4. There were a few queens on that Season that showed me drag can be more than just impersonations—it's about creating your own character, art, stories, and performances. That liberating idea made me realize—drag is all about entertaining and being true to yourself, with no rules other than to captivate your audience.

My First Performance & How Drag Has Evolved

My official debut was in April 2012, at a 20s themed birthday bash for a friend. I showed up as a flapper girl, and from there, my love for performing only grew. When I started, I needed a queer space just to be authentically me. Despite some negativity and hecklers, I kept going because I knew there were others out there who needed that safe, fun space—and let’s be real, drag is FUN!

Over the years, my style has changed from doing only comedic bits with props and staging into a full-blown entertainer capable of celebrity impersonations, original music, and diverse shows. I’ve learned to be confident in who I am and to never stop evolving.

Achievements & Milestones

Some of my proudest moments include releasing my first single “Pussywalk” in 2018, appearing on *Jerry Springer* in 2021, and winning $10,000 on Peacock’s *FROGGER* in 2022. I also run South Jersey’s longest-running monthly drag show, now in its 9th year—and that’s truly a labor of love!

My Perspective on Drag Today

When I first started, drag was mainly for fun, and that’s still true. But it’s become more political and purposeful, especially with the current state of the USA. My message? "We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re not going anywhere."

Behind the Scenes: My Drag Brunch Routine

A typical Drag Brunch day for me starts early—waking up around 5AM to care for my five indoor cats, Marilyn (our office kitty), and my outdoor crew: Stinky Pete, Petunia, Earl Grey, and my other cats. After a few cuddles, I hop in the shower, shave, and prep my skin for a long day of Drag. By about 6AM, I’m applying my makeup and jamming out to whatever album I’m feeling that day.. Next I have breakfast to fuel myself for the long day ahead, and right after that I head to the venue to arrive by 9AM for a quick rehearsal or 2. I love to give my all when I’m in Drag, so after a back to back seating of Drag Brunch, I am EXHAUSTED. Once I get home, it’s time for shower #2, followed by cat cuddles and whatever Netflix show grabs my attention that night. If there’s nothing good on, old seasons of Big Brother are my crutch. I’m usually in bed by about 9PM, ready to get my 8 hours of sleep in and do it all over again tomorrow!

Balancing Life and Drag

It wasn’t always easy finding that perfect balance between my drag career and personal life. Earlier on, I focused about 95% on drag, but over the years I’ve learned to share that spotlight equally. Now, I make time for my cats, my performances, and my own mental health, and honestly, life is better that way.

What’s Next?

Final Words—”My Mantra“

Whenever I get nervous or unsure, I remind myself: “Do it Scared”. It’s a philosophy I’ve lived by since I can remember, and it’s honestly worked wonders.
